Reusing in design
From the Parisian meetings among field operators who were at the DATE 2002, one very interesting fact has emerged: reusing is becoming essential in the field of electronic design. Actually, by Reuse, the companies in the field mean something much more important than just reusing the software. We are moving towards the reusing of entire HDL projects, IP blocks, diagram projects, and not just a few software parts. Facts prove in a very clear way the past few years' trend in terms of reuse in the EDA environment. According to Dataquest's indications, in 2002 53% of the ASIC/ASSP market value should refer to SoC projects. Companies are moving towards reusing for various reasons. Among the main ones the fact the reusing of IP blocks tends to increase available corporate resources towards higher project abstraction levels, those that provide more added value to the system and/or finished product, whereas reused blocks can provide a solid starting point, tough not critical according to expectations, to which to dedicate the minimum human and design resources. Using these techniques further allows a simpler development of SoC projects by some million equivalent gates. April.2002 Date 2002
