Increasing electric production deriving from renewable sources from the current 6% to 12% before 2010. This is the objective fixed by the European Parliament in matters of energy. The sought result is not only this one, however: it also means moving an important step towards the compliance towards commitments undersigned with the Kyoto protocol against greenhouse effect gases emission.
The European Parliament has approved the directive on the promotion of electric energy produced by renewable sources for home electric market. However, among the various methods for renewable energy production methods included in the directive, such as wind and sun, true and clean renewable sources of energy, there is also waste incineration.
The approved directive asks Member states to fix some national objectives of consumption and production of energy deriving from renewable sources; it establishes for the Commission to check the conformity of National objectives so that, overall on a community level, renewable source energy consumption is of 12% of the total and that electricity consumption from these sources reaches 22,1%, and that community obligations relative to climate change are respected.
The directive also maintains valid the National support regimes of aid for the production of electricity from renewable sources, whereas member states are held to promote the inclusion of the same inside their home markets, respecting competition rules.
