The Environment Action Plan
The Local Agenda 21, has received, up to now, relatively small attention limited to a few, albeit interesting, initiatives started by some local administrations. Among others, the cities of Modena, Rome, Venice, Milan and Turin have started processes of Local Agenda 21, around fifteen had subscribed the Aalborg Charter in 1994, the city of Bologna obtained one of the prizes (Ecolabel) granted during the Lisbon's 1996 European Conference of Sustainable Cities. The majority of interested local administrations settled with pinpointing indicators that enable monitoring in an organic way the problems, without setting any consequent wider breadth plans. And yet the Italian territory's structure is characterised by cities of smaller dimensions, which are compact, provided with relevant environmental resources, with communities with many social interests and a strong sense of belonging. To know activities in Italy, that is the cities, provinces, and regions that are elaborating their own Local Agenda 21, there is a Coordinamento Italiano Agende 21 Locali, an organism which puts in a synergy the various work groups and represents in a community context the Italian vision and action for sustainable development.
