World Standard Day

The 14th October 2001 the World Standard Day, founded by Cenelec, the European Committee for Electrotechnic standard, and promoted jointly by the adhering National Committee, among which the Italian Electrotechnic Committee, CEI.

This years' topic was the environment. Cenelec, in the past few years, has put ever more attention on the environmental matter, creating a specific Work Group, WG 85-3 "Environmental Standardization" entirely dedicated to creation of awareness for environmental issues and to the promotion of Electrotechnic standardization that will safeguard the environment and allow sustainable development.

This Work Group, through a group of synergies involving major experts of National Standardization Boards, of International Industry, the European Commission and third interested parties, has given a considerable impulse to consideration of environmental aspects in the standardization process in general and also inside other Cenelec Committees, especially among those that deal with standardizing aspects tied in with tests and measurements.

The environmental cause was received with great warmth ion a National level from the CEI, which this year had just dedicated a full day of in depth discussion on the standardizing activity topic concerning electric sector standards relative to environmental topics (CEI Seminar, 8th  March 2001), a day that has seen the contributions of the major Italian experts on the topic and participation from over 200 people.

Published documents on the topic are two CEI documents: the CEI 0-8:1999 "Introduction guide to the analysis of the life cycle in electro-technology " and the CEI 0-9:2000 "Inclusion in electrotechnical product standards of aspects tied in with the environment ".

Also this year the two CEI 211-6 and 211-7 guides for measurement and testing of electromagnetic fields with reference to human exposure were released. Italian knowledge on the matter have received an authoritative recognition in the Cenelec context with the nomination (March 2001) of the CEI Technical Director, eng. Carlo Masetti, as Chairman of TC 211 "Human exposure to electromagnetic fields ".
