Exposure to electromagnetic fields

In the course of the 108th  meeting of the Bureau Technique Cenelec, held in Brussels in July 2001, four standards where ratified by the Technical Committee 211 concerning human exposure to electromagnetic fields.

The first two, EN 50360 and EN 50361, concern mobile phones and, more in general, any transmitting device with radiating parts near the human ear.

La EN 50360 " Product standard to demonstrate the compliance of mobile telephones with the basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (300MHz - 3GHz)", has the aim to show the conformity to exposure limitations as established by the European Recommendation 1999/519/EC.

This same standard will be entered into the list of harmonized standards according to the European Directive 1999/5/EC on radio devices and telecommunication terminals (RTTE), a list that will be published on the Official Gazette of the European Union.

Measure methods are highlighted in standard EN 50361 "Basic standard for the measurement of Specific Absorption Rate related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields from mobile phones (3000 MHz - 3 GHz)".

The same is similar for the other two standards, EN 50357 and EN 50364, related to the human exposure to electromagnetic fields from devices used in alarm and shoplifting preventing systems.

The former is a basic standard which describes the various measurement methods, the latter on the other hand is a product standard to show compliance with basic limits. EN 50364 will also be entered in the list of the harmonized standards according to European Directive RTTE.

The four standard, in their whole, make up the first series of documents published by the TC 211 of Cenelec from Mandate M/305 for the preparation of basic, generic and product standards, relating to human exposure to electromagnetic fields, a subject which is more than actual in the European environment.

Other documents part of the furnished work schedule of this Committee are in advanced stages of approval.
