Where the Audio industry is heading
The Milanese exhibition promoted by Assoexpo has given the opportunity to check the status of the Audio (industrial side) sector. Some solutions were introduced that will change recording. Computer evolution, the continuous increase of their power and the increased versatility of all software have for a long time been making the use of the hard disk for multi-track recording, in a reliable way and according to the highest professional standards. All of this, integrated in a context where even the evolution of media dedicated to audio reproduction is going through a considerable development. One of the novelties in this sector is the evolution towards new supports for audio reproduction: Super Audio CD and DVD Audio and, in any case, the end of going beyond the CD's limitations is now truly at hand. The current frontier on hard disk is fixed at 24bit/96kHz, the digital elaboration of the 32bit audio with mobile comma and surround mixing ("surrounded by sound" was the topic of the 109th AES Convention), and the development of new software will definitely bring to a total management of the audio, starting form the 200 recordable tracks, until the dynamic management of the surround and the listening system. It is clear that this evolution of the recording system will involve all professionals finally making all classical elaborations of analogue domain possible (even if with far less noise and practically infinite storage capabilities) with plug-ins of very high quality, reliability and sound also making possible all the elaborations in the digital domain (normalisation, time stretching, convolution etc). This evolution implies the "mutation" of all the equipment that gravitates around recording, with new roles for many of the "classic" equipment (mixers, effects, dynamics, etc). A market that evolves ever more into strongly innovative solutions. December.2001 Midiware ProAudio
