Twenty-seven minor Italian islands will take part in the competition “Isola del Sole” (Sun Island), advertised by the Ministry of Environment for the co-funding of projects for the conversion of local energy requirements with alternative sources.Within the month of November 2001, on the basis of feasibility studies the Ministry will receive, two "Sun Island" will be selected, who will benefit from the 6,5 billion lira prize.
These resources made available by the ministry will be added to community and private funding, so as to create a such a coverage that will guarantee the start of the “solarization” process.
Chosen islands will then be entered into the project "Take-off campaign" of the doubling plan of renewable sources within 2010: an idea promoted by the European Union, with the aim to convert 100 territorial situations to clean energy.
