The communications network market evolution is remarkable in these first few years of the third millennium. From figures made available by market research company Dell'ORO, Alcatel has more than doubled its share in the world market of terrestrial optical transmission networks, including the DWDM (Dense Wavelenght Division Multiplexing), SDH/SONET and ADM (Add-drop multiplexer) systems in 2001.The figures Alcatel provided to the press on the basis of Dell'Oro's survey, show how the French multinational has progressively increased its share in the course of the year reaching in the fourth quarter the status of market leader, owing especially to the introduction of a new generation of products. According to the Alcatel report, in the market of optical transmission in the last period of the year, has a 21,5%, share which compares to the 8,5% of the year before. It also needs to be pointed out that Italy is the centre of excellence for the design activities and production of the companies in the field.
In 2001, the company has provided more than 30 thousand multiservice SDH (OMSN) Nodes to 135 operators, mostly for metropolitan applications; it has also installed its DWDM systems in the networks of 70 customers throughout the world for the development of backbones.
