Lithium ion batteries

Maxell's lithium batteries feature both an operating voltage and energy density that are 3 times higher than Ni-Cad and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries consist of three layers: a positive electrode, separator, and negative electrode. Lithium cobalt oxide that features high cycle life characteristics at high voltage is used in the positive electrode, whereas a carbon material featuring high capacity, stable voltage, and high crystalinity is used in the negative electrode. Porous polyolefin membranes are used in the separator, while an organic solvent is used for electrolytic solution.

Lithium ions inside the positive electrode dissolve into the solution and transfer between the negative electrode during charging, and between the positive electrode during discharge.
